Made in cinerama, and for total audience involvement, and obviously losing a little on the flat screen, the film cinematically is a gem. But it has no character in the way most films have character. It is almost completely extra-human.

If Clarke and Kubrick started out to make a film that would make people think, they have succeeded, but their main mistake is that which trapped many science-fictions writers in the 30s and 40s: machines are interesting, but people are fascinating.
